I’m a big fan of the “other fish,” as all good travel anglers are, so when I got the call from Bobby Gray to go fly fishing for carp I was excited. On the way to Brookville Lake, in southeastern Indiana, Bobby told me the game plan. We would use the trolling motor to investigate the shallows looking for feeding fish and then casting a small fly in front of its nose. Fishing was slow at first because of the poor water clarity, but as we were idling to the next flat, Bobby spotted a “cruiser,” which is a carp cruising around with half its body out of the water feeding on gizzard shad fry. We moved into casting range and
Bobby laid the fly right in front of the carp’s mouth, one strip and fish on. After that we just idled around looking for the “cruisers”, landing a dozen more carp before heading home. The big fish of the day was 28 inches long with the average catch around 20 inches. I grew up near Brookville Lake and fished it quite often. I would have to say this was the most
action and fun I’ve had on this lake.
