On this trip I took my friend and contractor, Gary Bruckert of One-80 Design. We were heading down south to Byrdstown, Tennesee to kayak fish a small river that flows into Dale Hollow Lake. Having just received some new camping equipment to test out, we decided to camp for the weekend. I found a free campsite located next to a small fish camp called Gunnels. This worked out perfect since it’s at the end of the river that we fished the most. We set camp and headed out. Jesse Walton, owner of “Against the Flow” kayak rentals and trips, was nice enough to join us since this was our first time kayak fishing. We put in what looked like a mountain stream with 3 inches of water, wondering how this was the same river where we set camp. After Jesse gave us a few pointers, we headed down river. I’ve seen a salmon run on television before but never in person. Imagine that, but instead of salmon they were suckers. They were so thick I could feel them bumping the bottom of the kayak.
I would have given anything for a fly rod at that time. Not only were there thousands of suckers, there were big gar everywhere in no more than two feet of water. I asked Jessie, “Are these fish normally here”? He replies, “Yes”. I then asked, “Why didn’t you mention them”? He replied, “They’re suckers”. Ah, yes, those “other fish”. Let’s just say
I can’t wait until next spring. All in all, we had a great time and caught some nice fish; smallmouth, suckers, blue gill, crappie, white bass,
and big shad. Jesse definitely has some nice honey holes to show
you. Jesse also can deliver kayaks to just about any location on
Dale Hollow Lake.
