The first few calls I got when I opened the Travel Anglers store were for Steelhead. So I did my research and found out that Michigan has the biggest Steelhead run out of the great lake states. Knowing that
I hunted down Captain Tim VanGessel who lives and guides on Michigan’s Muskegon river. Captain Tim is a hardcore trout fisherman, who by far has the best equipment on the water and is also Orvis endorsed. For you non-fly fisherman out there Captain Tim has a technique with a fly rod called the “clunk & dunk” that any fisherman can do. As it turns out it is also the best presentation for the majority of the year. I met Captain Tim at his house on the river and was fishing in his custom jet boat within five minutes. In one day I had eighteen hook ups but only landed four fish all in the ten pound class. I just wasn’t on my game. Captain Tim also provides a great shore lunch and the best pretzels you’ll ever eat (TAPs Pretzels). If you want to catch steelhead for sport Captain Tim will get you hooked up more than anybody else on the river but it’s up to you to land the fish. Captain Tim also guides on the Manistee, White, Grand & St. Joseph rivers. I’m looking forward to heading back up to throw some dry flies.
