Bone Fish, Bone Fish, Bone Fish. I have never caught a Bone Fish prior to this trip. I didn’t understand why it was one of the most sought after game fish in the world. I do now and yes I have a new favorite fish. Pound for pound the hardest fighting fish in the world. That’s not the best part; the best part is you’re catching them in middle of paradise. This trip I took Capt. Greg from St. Pete due to a last minute cancellation. Capt. Greg is an outstanding fisherman and good guy so it worked out great. The first two days were tough; it was so windy it was hard to spot fish we also couldn’t use our fly gear at all. That is why I always bring spin gear as well. All we caught the first two days were Barracuda & Bar Jacks. The third day we realized the wind was not going to let up. We decided to relieve our pain with Belikin beer (which is good) and a hammock. Then I hear another guest at the resort (which there were only ten of and all were fun to hang out with) say, “Look at all the fish”. Having just got comfortable I was hesitant to get up. I told myself I was at work and got up to investigate. Sure enough it was a school of Bone Fish about 500 thick. Fish On! Fourth day we tagged along on an excursion to a near by island. Best decision I’ve made all year. We started to wade a flat that ran the length of the island. Within five minutes I hooked a ten pound Bone and Stella (my reel) started to scream. After landing the fish I called for Diane (another guest at the resort) who I knew really wanted to catch a fish. I gave her my rod and pointed out some fish and within five minutes fish on, another ten pound trophy. Not bad for her first Bone Fish. Before heading back to the resort for lunch Capt. Greg landed 15, I landed 10, and Diane landed 3 trophies. Did I mention we were only there for two hours?
The resort staff was amazing, the food was good, the cabanas were five stars and the shower & bathroom facility’s worked out just fine. The main activity at the resort is not fishing. Kayaking, wind surfing, snorkeling, and diving are all guided, fishing you are on your own. Some of you like myself will enjoy that feature. Some of you would prefer a guide which is why I will be hosting trips to this location starting in 2010.
In case you were wondering what we were using instead of flies that would be custom made bonefish jigs from tbsjigs.com obviously they worked great.
